History of Plastic Surgery

The history of cosmetic surgery can be seen from the ancient times. Physicians from the ancient India which involves the immense Indian surgeon named Susrutha who make use of skin grafts for restoring work around 8 th century BC. The work known as Sushruta Samhita of the famous surgeon portrays otoplasty and rhinoplasty.

The awareness of plastic surgery survived in India around 18 th century which can be observed from the reports which were published in Gentleman’s Magazine. First of all, Romans repaired the damaged ears around the 1 st century BC. In Europe , around the middle of the 15 th century a plastic surgery of the nose was performed. The plastic surgery for the face or head involves greater risks and it was introduced in the 19 th and 20 th centuries.

The first plastic surgeon in the US was Dr. John Peter Mettauer who operated the first cleft palate operation with the help of the instruments in the year 1827. Sir Harold Gillies was regarded as the father of the modern plastic surgery and established various methods of modern plastic surgery.

Cosmetic surgery is considered as the famous opportunity for individual development and about 11.9 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the year 2004 in the US . Some of the cosmetic procedures contain risks. The word cosmetic surgery means the surgery that is planned to develop the appearance or cosmetics. Some of the types of cosmetic surgery involve abdominal etching, buttock augmentation, abdominoplasty, otoplasty, rhinoplasty and mastopexy.
